Back in 1987, Michael Frilund starts Frilund’s Specialist Workshop.

His dream is to create a workshop where he can invent, build, and develop his craft. That dream came true early, when in 1989 PP Møbler entrusted Michael with the metalwork for several of their Wegner pieces, the start of a collaboration that has grown ever since. Over the years, Michael Frilund and his team have built deep experience in developing and producing frames and fittings for the makers of Danish furniture classics. What drives the company, as it always has, is the desire to create the finest craftsmanship and the most beautiful design. That same ambition, to keep building on the great Danish craft traditions, is a key reason Michael Frilund decided in the spring of 2024 to start his own furniture production. Shortly after, cabinetmaker Mie Hansen joined the Frilund workshop, and since then, the Smith and the Cabinetmaker have been close sparring partners in the development of Frilund's furniture.

The story of
Frilund

Michael Frilund has been fascinated by engineering, machines, and processes since he was a child. When the time came to choose a trade, he knew without hesitation that he would train as a machinist and smith. In 1987, at just 23, he opened Frilunds Specialværksted, driven by curiosity about what could be made from metal and the urge to keep developing his craft. Over the years, Michael has worked across many branches of the metal trade, producing frames and fittings for Danish furniture classics by Hans Wegner and Poul Kjærholm, among others. Along the way, he also trained as a chemical engineer, specialising in electroplating and technical chemistry, and for many years his workshop has produced process equipment for surface treatment as well.

THE SMITH

Mie Hansen has always had a strong interest in furniture and design, but it was during her time at Krabbesholm Højskole in Skive that she decided to turn that interest into her profession. Shortly after, she began her cabinetmaking apprenticeship at Kvist Industries in West Jutland, where she produced Danish design furniture by Hans Wegner and Børge Mogensen, among others. As a qualified cabinetmaker, Mie went on to study Furniture Design at VIA University College in Herning, training as a design technologist in the field.

What drives Mie is making beautiful objects from wood. Her curiosity, her instinct for development, and the chance to work with wood inspire her to find new solutions. That is why she said yes when Michael asked her to help develop and produce an entirely new furniture brand. At Frilund, she has the opportunity to build on the Danish craft traditions and create furniture that brings together metal, wood, aesthetics, and functionality.
